The summer river sessions start in June each year.
The Avon has plenty of flat water, which is ideal for improving paddling technique, as well as a weir that makes an excellent play spot for experienced paddlers. Coaching is provided in small groups, made up of paddlers with similar levels of experience, including a group of beginners. The river is a natural progression for those who learned to paddle in the pool over the winter, and there is the opportunity to work towards an assessment for a personal skills award. More experienced paddlers just come to have fun.
The session starts at 19:00, finishing between 21:00 and 21:30, and boats and equipment are available to fit most shapes and sizes; you just need to wear appropriate clothing. New members are very welcome; complete beginners can join in at the start of the season in June.
Equipment hire costs £4 for under 18s and £5 for adults. Non-members pay an additional £1 or £2 evening membership charge for under 18s and adults respectively.
If you’re interested, please contact a committee member, or come along at 18:45 on a Tuesday at the back of the Leisure Centre at the start of the season. Dates for the river sessions can be found on the calendar.
Before paddling on the river, please read the River Paddling document so that you know what equipment and clothing you will need.
